NORWALK, Conn. -- Students in the HEART Group at Brien McMahon High School in Norwalk recently spoke to fifth graders about the harmful effects of cigarettes and other tobacco products, including e-cigarettes and hookah pens.
During the March 11 presentation, the students were asked about many aspects related to the topic, which opened up discussions about the long-term effects of smoking and the chemicals that are in cigarettes.
HEART (Health Education Awareness Raised by Teens} findings were then presented in an engaging way to educate the students.
Student participants included Emily Davis, Armani Weise, Kaicy Coote, Madison Calloo, Iris Fajardo, Zaria Azor, Cat Hammel and Keona Butler.
Group facilitators included Carlos Reinoso Jr., director of the Dr. Robert E. Appleby School Based Health Centers, Giovanna Pisani, director of the Mid Fairfield Substance Abuse Coalition, and Barry Halpin, prevention specialist, Liberation Programs.
