Moccia was selected as the party’s candidate at the Norwalk Republican Town Committee’s nomination caucus Monday night. He leads the recently-filled Republican slate in this November’s municipal elections.

“With a mix of incumbents, some returning veterans of politics, as well as some new and young faces, I believe we have one of the strongest tickets we’ve had in a while,” Norwalk RTC chair Art Scialabba said via email.

Other incumbents on the Republican ticket include Town Clerk Richard McQuaid and City Treasurer Ralph DePanfilis. The GOP also nominated Nikitas Handrinos for city sheriff and Brian Smith and Kathryn Angela Martino for selectmen.

For Common Council, the Republicans picked Edmund Ryan and Robert Mercurio in District A, Frank Verdone and Edward McQuillan in District B, Michelle Maggio and Sarah Mann in District C, Jerry Petrini and Shannon O’Toole Giandurco in District D, and Emily Wilson and Dave McCarthy in District E. Council-at-Large nominees are Richard Bonenfant, Bruce Kimmel, Glenn Iannaccone, Douglas Hempstead and Joe Kendy.

Board of Education members Artie Kassimis and Sue Haynie also received nominations for re-election. John Bazzano and Lauren Rosato will join them on the Republican ticket for the school board.

For Taxing District commissioners, the Republicans nominated Robert Mercurio in the First, Cesar Ramirez and Edward McQuillan in the Second, Jim Anderson in the Third and Tammy Langalis in the Sixth. Taxing District treasurer candidates are Brian Smith (First), Harold Bonnet (Second), Michael Intrieri (Third) and John Verel (Sixth).

Moccia’s challenger in the mayor’s race is still undecided. At the Democratic Caucus last week none of the four major candidates was able to win a majority. Former Town Clerk Andy Garfunkel, District D Democratic Chairman Vinny Mangiacopra, Common Councilman Matt Miklave and former Police Chief Harry Rilling are all expected to be on the ballot for a primary later this summer.

“With the mayor leading the way, and knowing what the alternative would bring (no matter who their candidate is) I am confident that Norwalkers will want to continue with our leadership, as Mayor Moccia is the only candidate who will see fit to, and will be protecting Norwalk’s Future,” Scialabba said.
