NORWALK, Conn. -- American Red Cross caseworkers are working on meeting the needs of six adults left homeless by a fire Thursday afternoon at a Elmwood Avenue three-story house that The Hour reports left one firefighter injured.

The Hour reports that the firefighter's injuries are not life-threatening but he is being treated in the burn unit at Bridgeport Hospital after suffering burns on his back fighting the fire. An older couple was able to make it out safely of the house at 15 Elmwood Ave., The Hour says.

It took firefighters about 20 minutes to control the fire that broke out around 1:20 p.m., but the house was badly damaged. Officials said it appeared to have started on the second floor but the cause is still being investigated, The Hour says.

In the meantime, American Red Cross officials say they are working with three families left homeless by the fire to work out a long-term care plan. Red Cross officials said they rely on community donations to provide assistance to those who need it.
