Norwalk Man Faces Fraud Charges In Montana

NORWALK, Conn. – A Norwalk man has been arrested on charges stemming from a hole-in-one at a golf course in Montana.

Kevin Kolenda, 55, of 33 N. Water St. was charged with being a fugitive from justice after he was apprehended by Norwalk Special Services Officers Kyle Lipeika and Steven Luciano in an extradition arrest, according to an affidavit at Norwalk Superior Court.

Kolenda is the former owner of Hole in Won Inc., according the affidavit. The state of Montana alleges that Kolenda took $967 in premiums to insure a golf course and then failed to provide $18,000 in coverage when a man hit a hole-in-one on Aug. 13, 2010, at the Missoula Country Club. On May 12, the state issued a warrant for Kolenda's arrest with the intention to charge him with insurance fraud, a felony, and acting as an insurance provider without a license, a misdemeanor. The warrant is extraditable nationwide.

Lipeika and Luciano tracked down Kolenda on Monday, first checking an address they had for him on North Water Street and then being advised by a resident there that Kolenda was at an Elizabeth Street business, according the affidavit. He was held initially on $500,000 bond, which was then lowered to $10,000 by Judge Maureen Dennis. If he makes bond, it will be with the stipulation that he will turn himself in to the proper authorities.

The hole-in-one was hit during a charity golf tournament, Fox News reports. Troy Peissig, a scratch golfer with three previous holes-in-one to his credit, stepped up to the 12th hole and nailed the 170-yard shot. He has yet to receive his prize.

Kolenda previously has been charged with larceny, professional gambling, phone gambling, producing insurance without a license, being an unlicensed insurance broker and criminal contempt, according to the affidavit.
