The Norwalk Fire Department purchased a two and a half ton military cargo vehicle, which they plan to utilize during high water rescues. Officials said that the truck has the ability to move in high-water conditions, where other vehicles may stall out during a storm.
Officials said that the truck can be used specifically for transport, whether it be rescue victims or rescue workers during flood situations, similar to those that have cropped up during the recent rash of hurricanes in the past few years.
The vehicle was purchased for approximately $1,400 as part of a military surplus buying program that has been instituted by the federal government. The truck has just 1,800 miles on it, and features an automatic transmission, unlike some other trucks in the Norwalk Fire Department fleet, which have double clutches.
According to fire officials, although it currently is painted desert tan and looks like your standard military fare, they plan to have it repainted and will add a cover to make it more accessible for firefighters and rescue workers.
