The fire at 2487 Main St., in Bridgeport, started around 8 p.m. in a third-floor apartment of the building that houses Sorrento Importing Company, along with several apartments, said Bridgeport Fire Chief Richard Thode.

Once on scene, firefighters found one injured resident inside the apartment and immediately transported him to a local hospital, Thode said. The chief was not sure of the man's condition early Thursday.

Because of the humidity, extra fire crews were called in to help relief firefighters, he said.

The fire was contained to the single apartment, but the rest of the building received water and smoke damage that will require a clean-up company to come in and repair, he added.

Two firefighters were also hospitalized overnight due to issues with heat, both were released Thursday morning, the chief said.

The fire was extinguished within an hour, he said.
