An officer from the Westport Police Department on patrol at approximately 3 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 14 spotted a vehicle speeding on Post Road West.

When the officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop on King’s Highway North, the driver sped away and refused to stop when he activated his emergency lights.

According to police, the driver sped through the intersection without stopping at the stop sign, before he lost control on King’s Highway North, crossing several lanes, striking mailboxes and sliding across two lawns.

The vehicle eventually came to a stop and the driver fled on foot, leaving behind two passengers in the vehicle. No injuries were reported, and the car sustained “moderate” front-end damage and was towed from the scene.

The investigation into the chase determined that the driver was 22-year-old Alexander Katz, the son of the vehicle’s registered owner.

The owner was ultimately contacted and brought his son to Westport Police Headquarters, where he was arrested and charged with two counts of reckless endangerment, interfering with a police officer, reckless driving, disobeying the signal of a police officer and evading responsibility. He was also cited for several vehicle and traffic violations.

Katz was released after posting a $1,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Norwalk Court on Oct. 25 to answer the charges.
