"It is with great sadness that we share with you the passing of one of our students. Sean Sullivan, a first-year student from Norwalk studying economics passed away unexpectedly," said a statement from UConn.

UConn spokesman Stephanie Reitz said, "Unfortunately it is true that we lost one of our own."

UConn police were called to Grange Hall shortly before noon Monday on a report that a student was discovered unresponsive in his room, she said.

Medics tried unsuccessfully to revive him, Reitz said.

There were no indications of criminal involvement and no safety dangers to others, she said.

The cause of death is not known and will be determined by the state Medical Examiner's Office after an autopsy, Reitz said.

Police are continuing to investigate.

The Dean of Students' Office, Residential Life and others met with his friends and others on his dorm floor Monday night, she said.

"We extend our sincere condolences to Sean's family and friends," Reitz said.

Any UConn students who would like to talk with someone confidentially about their feelings over this incident are encouraged reach out to Counseling & Mental Health Services, she said.

No information was available about funeral services.

Christine Wilson, Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs will be working with interested students in planning a UConn campus memorial service.

Condolences to the Sullivan family can be sent to the Dean of Students Office, 233 Glenbrook Road, Unit-4062, Storrs, CT 06269-4062.
