NORWALK, Conn. Norwalk educator and community leader Richard Fuller Sr. died on Sunday night at Norwalk Hospital. He was 67 years old.
For 25 years, Fuller served as executive director of the George Washington Carver Community Center. He also served on Norwalk's board of education for over two decades. He started his career as a teacher in Norwalk and later taught in Bridgeport.
Mayor Richard Moccia issue this statement today about Fuller's legacy: "It is not an exaggeration to say that he was a powerful force in the education community. His love of our young people had no boundaries. I never witnessed an encounter where the young people in attendance did not show Richard their appreciation and gratitude. He influenced thousands of students to make the right choices and help launch many successful careers. Rick Fuller will not just be missed, he cannot be replaced. As a friend, I offer my personal sympathies to his wife Carolyn and the entire Fuller family and I also extend those same condolences on behalf of a grateful city."
Debbie Ross Williams, program manager at the Carver Center, counts herself among the many people who Fuller helped. Williams, who grew up playing basketball at the center, says that Fuller encouraged her to go to college."He was a father figure for me, he was always there," says Williams who lost her own father when she was young.
"He was a pillar of the community and always put people first," she says.
