NORWALK, Conn. The deaths of both of Saturday morning's shooting victims have been declared homicides, according to Norwalk Police Lt. Paul Resnick. Iroquois Alston, 27, and Rickita Smalls, 22, died of gunshot wounds. Police say both were Bridgeport residents.
Alston died of a gunshot wound to the head, a spokesperson for the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner said earlier Tuesday. Resnick released his information at 4 p.m. More specific information is not mentioned about Smalls' cause of death. The autopsies were done Monday at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Farmington.
The two were found dead in a small dark car awkwardly parked on Avenue B. Residents of the neighborhood called police at 7:48 a.m. to report the grisly discovery. Police originally speculated that the deaths might have been a murder-suicide.
Avenue B is between Scribner and Taylor avenues, in a quiet neighborhood of well-manicured lawns. The car was not registered to a Norwalk resident and neighbors said they did not recognize it. But when an onlooker mentioned the name of one of the murder victims, others standing nearby said they knew her family. Family members arrived a short while later, anxious to know whether it was Smalls.
Her family placed lit candles at the scene on Sunday. A memorial poster featured many pictures of the slain young woman.
