GREENWICH, Conn. — In an effort to decrease the number of crashes on the Merritt in Greenwich, the Connecticut Department of Transportation is developing plans for improvements on four sharp curves on the parkway.
The DOT’s Office of Engineering is developing plans to provide "superelevation and roadway friction improvements" to four curves on the parkway to improve safety within these stretches of roadway, DOT said.
The sharp curves on the Merritt are near Exit 31, between Taconic Road and Lake Avenue.
DOT plans to apply High Friction Surface Treatment material along the pavement on the curves, which will give vehicles more grip on the roadway.
The project will also include superelevation improvements, which will slightly bank the curves on the roadway, DOT said.
This work may require the resetting of Merritt Parkway guide rails, curbs and/or concrete median barriers.
The schedule is accelerated, with the design work set to be completed in January. Construction is expected to start in summer.
The federal government will pay for 80 percent of the project, and the state will pay 20 percent of the costs.
No formal public hearing is planned on the project due to the limited nature of the proposed work.
