Statues were also vandalized in Middletown and New Haven, and police say the incidents may be related and may have been coordinated by an anarchist group, The Hour said.

In Norwalk, the base of the Columbus statue was tagged with the slogan "FAKE NEWS" stenciled in white paint. (See photo above.) The statue is part of the Heritage Wall in Thomas C. O’Connor Park on West Avenue.

The other three were vandalized with red paint thrown across the statues, The Hour said. In Bridgeport, the statue in Seaside Park was also tagged with the words “Kill the Colonizer” in white paint at the base.

The Revolutionary Abolitionist Movement, part of the anarchist movement known as Antifa, has been advocating vandalism against Columbus monuments across the county, Bridgeport Police Chief AJ Perez told The Hour.

In Stamford, police stepped up patrols of Columbus Park and its statue last week after receiving a warning from UNICO National, which celebrates the contributions of Italian-Americans, that statues might be targeted, The Hour said. No vandalism was reported in Stamford.
