40 mph Wind Gusts Recorded As Hundreds Lose Power Across Fairfield County

updated at 9:30 a.m. with more power outages in bold below: FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. — Hundreds of customers lost power Thursday morning as strong winds of over 40 mph gusted across Fairfield County, howling at windows, blowing down tree limbs and shaking trucks and cars on roads. 

Eversource is continuing to work to restore power across Connecticut on Friday afternoon. Tens of thousands were left in the dark after a powerful storm early Thursday.

The strongest wind gusts were recorded in Stamford at 43 mph and Sikorsky Airport at 41 mph, the National Weather Service said.

The entire region remains under a High Wind Warning until 11 a.m. Thursday, with west winds of 15 to 30 mph and gusts up to 50 to 60 mph. That is strong enough to blow down limbs, trees, and power lines. Winds will gradually decrease through the afternoon and evening.

As of 9:30 a.m., Eversource and United Illuminating were reporting the following outages:

  • Bethel: 4 customers
  • Bridgeport: 8 customers
  • Brookfield: 120 customers
  • Danbury: 126 customers
  • Easton: 93 UI customers, down from 239 customers; 12 Eversource customers
  • Fairfield: 1,534 customers
  • Greenwich: 243 customers
  • Monroe: 222 customers
  • New Canaan: 197 customers
  • New Fairfield: 315 customers, down from 562 customers
  • Newtown: 371 customers
  • Redding: 54 customers, down 279 customers
  • Ridgefield: 464 customers
  • Shelton: 7 customers
  • Sherman: 1 customer, down from 5 customers
  • Stamford: 23 customers
  • Stratford: 4 customers 
  • Trumbull: 9 customers, down from 43 customers
  • Weston: 2,554 customers
  • Westport: 165 customers
  • Wilton: 98 customers

It's sunny and clear, but noticeably cooler conditions are expected Thursday with temperatures 15 to 25 degrees cooler than Wednesday. Highs will be near 40 degrees and drop to about 25 overnight.

A few snow showers are possible Friday afternoon as temperatures continue to dip. The high will be near 35 degrees, but drop into the teens overnight. 

For Saturday, it will be mostly sunny, with a high near 27 and blustery winds of 15 to 20 mph.

Temperatures will plunge Saturday night into the single digits. But Sunday will be sunny, with a high near 34.

The warmth returns for the work week, with partly sunny skies and a high near 51 on Monday.
