Study: Low Salaries Help Rank Connecticut As 7th Worst State For Doctors

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- Low salaries contribute to Connecticut being ranked among the worst states to practice medicine in, according to a WalletHub analysis.

Connecticut ranked 7th worst in the personal finance website's "2017’s Best & Worst States for Doctors" report issued in time for National Doctor's Day on March 30.

To determine the best states for doctors WalletHub researchers looked at 14 key metrics in the 50 states and District of Columbia. The data set ranges from the average annual wage of physicians to hospitals per capita to quality of public hospital system, said the report.

Here are the results for Connecticut in the analysis where 1 equals "best" and 25 equals "average": 

  • 47th - Average Annual Wage of Physicians (Adjusted for Cost of Living)
  • 50th - Average Monthly Starting Salary of Physicians (Adjusted for Cost of Living)
  • 50th -  Hospitals per Capita
  • 47th - Projected Number of Physicians per Capita by 2024
  • 44th - Malpractice Award Payout Amount per Capita
  • 28th -  Annual Malpractice Liability Insurance Rate
  • 45th - Current Competition (Number of Physicians per Capita)

The best state to practice medicine is Iowa. At No. 1, according to WalletHub Iowa received a total ranking score of 68.67, as compared to the worst state, New York, at No. 51, with a total score of 28.49.

Connecticut, which came in at No. 45, has an overall score of 38.33, according to WalletHub.
