STAMFORD, Conn. — The Shelter for the Homeless in Stamford has received a $25,000 grant from the Norwalk-based Fairfield County Community Foundation as part of its initiative to expand its supportive housing program.

The grant will support the costs associated with a full-time program coordinator to lead the project and manage the successful implementation of these important community housing resources.

“We would like to thank the Fairfield County Community Foundation for awarding this generous grant," said Rafael Pagan Jr., executive director of Shelter for the Homeless. "These supportive housing units allow us to provide a stable environment that clients can afford as they work toward getting back on their feet. The coordinator position is essential to ensuring property oversight and implementation of case management services."

The coordinator will manage two housing properties previously purchased by Shelter for the Homeless. The buildings, which are in Norwalk, called for significant external and internal renovations and will ultimately provide 36 single room occupancy units for “longterm” homeless and “chronically homeless.” Both properties will offer support services.

“Our strategy is simple, straightforward and effective: Reduce homelessness by building affordable housing with appropriate, client focused supports,” Pagan said. “These supports increase access to community resources, reduce vulnerability to risk, increase self-sufficiency, self-reliance and achieve housing stability – all of which improves quality of life and strengthens our community. ”
