Under the West Avenue Landscape Design Master Plan, the 2-plus-mile stretch that cuts through the heart of the city will receive a facelift with new lighting, bricked crosswalks, extensive landscaping and new art, among other improvements.
The plan divides the road into five zones, North Main Street to Garner Street, the Reed Putnam Development Area, the I-95 Overpass to Connecticut Avenue, the former YMCA to South of Wall Street and the Wall Street Intersection.
Each zone would receive improvements, such as dual overhead and pedestrian-level lighting and similar, low-maintenance plantings, according to Jason Williams, a landscape architect with Milone & MacBroom, the award-winning civil engineering and consulting firm contracted to put together the plan.
“We want o create a design cohesiveness all the way along the corridor,” Williams said during a recent presentation of the work-in-progress plan. “When people exit from I-95, they will see that Norwalk really cares about its streets.”
The plan is far from complete and is expected to take at least two years to complete. It also will receive extensive input from the Common Council, according to MaryGrace Weber, special projects manager for the Redevelopment Agency.
Costs of the multimillion-dollar plan have not yet been finalized, but the agency plans to apply for as many state and federal grants as possible to offset expenses.
