Baby Chicks Come Home To Roost At Wilton's Historic Ambler Farm

WILTON, Conn. — Ambler Farm recently got a rather unique delivery by express mail — baby chicks straight from the farm.

“We get them within two days of them being born,” said Kevin Meehan, Ambler Farm's property and program director.

The chicks join a menagerie of new animals at the farm, including baby ducks, turkeys and geese.

Children at the farm’s summer camp get to interact with the chicks — especially within their first few days on the farm.

“The first two weeks are when the baby chicks are the most engaging and then you get to the point when they start practicing to fly,” Meehan said. “It’s hard to hold an animal if it's flying."

Meehan orders multiple groups of chicks to be delivered throughout the summer, so the kids can better handle the chicks. “We want them to interact with our animals,” he said.

There are, of course, other attractions at the farm besides the chicks, which Meehan orders from a Monroe company. “The sheep and goats are a big favorite because they will come right up to you," Meehan said.

The chicks, ducks, turkeys and geese will reside at Ambler Farm through the summer. A few will remain into the fall.

At the end of the summer, the chicks will find homes with Ambler Farm’s apprentice families, volunteer staff and other friends. The ducks, geese, and turkeys will reside at the Speckled Rooster in Westport.

A group of volunteer animal caretakers and Ambler Farm’s volunteer apprentices tend to Ambler Farm’s animals throughout the year. Some apprentices come three times a week, while some tend to the animals each day.

Want to visit one of the new arrivals? Ambler Farm is open to visitors each day — dawn to dusk 365 days a year. And, on Saturdays between 9 and 11 a.m., the farm's apprentices are available to introduce visitors to the animals.
