Snow Starts Falling As Morning Commute Begins In Norwalk

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- Snow was beginning to fall just before dawn Monday, with 4 to 6 inches expected by the evening, in the start of a one-two punch of winter predicted for this week, the National Weather Service said.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday across all of Fairfield County. Wet snow is expected to fall across southwestern Connecticut, the lower Hudson Valley and Long Island, the weather service said. Most schools were closed across Fairfield County.

Drivers should be prepared to face snow, sleet and freezing rain, which could cause travel difficulties, slippery roads and limited visibility.

A light snow began falling overnight and will become heavier by Monday morning, the weather service said. Visibility could be a half-mile or less into the afternoon. Snow will continue falling throughout the afternoon and taper off by Monday evening.

The heavy, wet snow could cause tree branches or power lines to fall, causing power outages and disrupting travel.

Winds will be 10 to 15 mph with temperatures in the low 30s.

A second storm is coming late Tuesday, with a Winter Storm Watch in effect from midnight to 6 p.m. Wednesday across southwestern Connecticut.

Heavy snow totaling 5 to 10 inches and up to a half-inch of ice buildup is forecast for Wednesday.

The snow will develop Tuesday then mix with and change to sleet and freezing rain. The periods of snow, sleet and freezing rain will make for treacherous travel from late Tuesday into late Wednesday.

Is wintry weather here to stay? The ground hog saw its shadow on Sunday, predicting six more weeks of winter. Read about it here on the Daily Voice.
