As schools closed early across the region, traffic was backed up a few miles on Route 7 northbound in Norwalk. Several cars were stuck sliding in the snow on the incline leading to the intersection with Grist Mill Road.
Traffic also was stacked bumper-to-bumper on Route 7 south through Wilton. Traffic was slow going at the intersection with Route 33 and also at the intersection with Grist Mill Road. During the evening rush hour, traffic was backed up more than three miles from Georgetown past Wilton High School, not moving an inch for half an hour.
Drivers ready to begin their weekends were finding four-wheel drive was coming in handy throughout Fairfield County on Friday afternoon.
The snow is expected to taper off Friday night. There is a slight chance of precipitation on Saturday, the National Weather Service says.
