Fact: Semi-automatic rifles as used in the tragedy are not used by any military who equip their soldiers with fully automatic rifles. Your premise is incorrect. Fact: 60% of deaths attributed to firearms are suicides. Suicide rates are independent of firearm ownership as those serious about suicide use other methods. Its designed to expel a projectile (typically made of lead with a copper jacket) that weighs typically between 115-147 grains to a velocity of between 1000-1300 fps. Its designed to be held in one hand & be more portable than a rifle though with the limitations of size it is less accurate & less powerful. Anything more than that is dependent upon use of the person who is in possession of it. View Comment

This has been verified by the State Police & the medical examiner said the AR15 was used in the killings, except I believe the killer used a pistol to do himself. http://www.ct.gov/despp/cwp/view.asp?Q=517284&A=4226 However, this does not take away from the fact that between 2004 & 2011 all rifles accounted for a total of 2 homicides out of a total of 850. Here's a couple quotes: "Fatalities from mass shootings (those with 4 or more victims in a particular place and time) account on average for 35 fatalities per year. Policies that address the larger firearm homicide issue will have a far greater impact even if they do not address the particular issues of mass shootings." "Assault weapons are not a major contributor to gun crime... I answered the defensive studies claim above. Show me where in the US any gun restrictive laws have reduced crime. If 30 round magazines are so dangerous, why has there been no statistical increase in the # of deaths attributable to the firearms that use them? All rifles (which include so-called 'assault weapons) have accounted for 2.5-3% of all homicides over the last 20 years even while they have become more popular & make up almost 50% of rifle sales in recent years. If they were being used so often in crime, why isn't the % going up? From 2004-2011 in CT there were 850 homicides. All rifles (again including so-called 'assault weapons') accounted for exactly 2 of those homicides. View Comment

Easy on the psychological projection, Jim. It seems that most anti-gun rights people are aware of their mental limitations & believe they would just start shooting people if they had access to a gun. They then believe that the same thing must be true about everyone else. I'm sure there are some fine psychiatrists in the area who can help you over your irrational fears.
