Jack, thank you for taking the time to patiently respond to questions in this forum. We may not agree with everything you have to say, but I , for one respect your willingness to engage on this. If the Mayor showed half that willingness rather than shouting people down in meetings and cutting them off we'd have a more informed and better run City and the Mayor would have fewer detractors.
So I am curious as to your thoughts. If we are currently taxed at a higher rate than surrounding towns, but we are underfunding the educational budget (which other surrounding towns with lower taxes are not) ...where is the gaping money suck in our City budget that is driving the taxes up? Something must be over funded if education is under funded and taxes still go up. The disproportionate monies we see back from ECS aren't the answer as those low returns have been constant and the surrounding towns get just as low, if not lower returns. Where is the fat in our City budget thats driving the spike in taxes and yielding such low returns on quality of life? View Comment
Rudy Giuliani dealt with this properly when he was Mayor of New York. He brought in a new Police Commissioner and they took 90% of the police officers working desk jobs and put them out on foot patrol. Crime rates plummeted. This hot spot for crime is 3 blocks from Police Headquarters. Put foot patrols out there 24/7. View Comment
I wish people were less accepting of us having similar crime experiences to Bridgeport, Stamford, Hartford or New Haven . Those are not laudable goals. We are 33% larger than Greenwich. Probably not practical to think we will achieve their crime rates or educational scores, but let's at least aspire in a positive direction. View Comment
Actually no, it doesn't always offend me when people disagree with me. You are pretty unique in that respect . Perhaps its your tactless manner of patrolling other peoples opinions and jumping in with confrontational terms like "you are guilty" . I don't appear to be the only person you have offended on these pages. I'm sure I won't be the last since its a bit of a full time job for you. View Comment
I'm fine with childless couples not wanting to take part in educating our kids. Just so long as they are fine with our kids not taking part in caring for them in their old age. View Comment
With regards to your point #3...Why would you go into the national search "knowing that you intend to hire a local candidate" ? That truly would be a waste of evreryone's time.
They should go into it knowing that they intend to hire the best candidate. Otherwise its a complete charade on a par with pretending that anyone other than large political donor City Carting is going to get the trash hauling contract. View Comment
In a job of this size and importance there's one simple rule. You want the best, most qualified person for the job. We have some really good Police Officers in Norwalk. We also have some really good teachers, but you would never limit a search for Superintendent of Schools to just the teachers and administrators in your own city. The probabilities that the best, most qualified person for the job already resides in Norwalk simply do not work in your favor.
JessiePierre, I find your equating this search to "looking for someone with a well written resume and a glimmering smile (that is who we'd end up hiring...let's face it) " to be crass and cynical and indicative of your lack of belief in the ability of our Mayor to conduct a good probing interview or candidate search. How can we be so quick to look outside of our city for the people who haul away our trash and not do the same to insure that we have the very top candidate for the person charged with enforcing our laws?
Lastly, in what was a rough and tumble election for Mayor, I never once saw Andy Garfunkel stoop to rancor or personal attack or base an argument on anything other than the facts involved. Wish we had more like him. I agree with Mr Garfunkel's position stated here. Further, I feel that the search committee should be expanded beyond the Mayor and his two appointed police commissioners and be approached with full transparency. View Comment
What I don't understand is this: Why was using the Rainy Day fund acceptable for covering the shortage for Oak Hills Golf Course but its not acceptable for protecting the quality of our kids educations? View Comment
Forensic audit does not need to be an indication of presumed criminal activity. Its as simple as wanting to have a clear understanding of what happened so that we aren't doomed to repeat whatever mistakes were made. I am uncomfortable that it is being objected to so strenuously . View Comment
Sure am glad we don't have a gang problem. Just : "A large group of teenagers wearing the colors of opposing gangs caused the brief closure of Norwalk's beach Memorial Day and intimidated patrons of Stew Leonard's Grill" .
Sure sounds like gang problems to me. Denial is not a river in Egypt. View Comment
Accountable for using a truck that belongs to a volunteer organization, of which he is one of the volunteers? Boy, Dave really blew the lid off that scandal !! Theres gotta be a Pulitzer waiting on this one! Can't wait for the follow up story where he reveals that Barbis was late returning a library book. View Comment
