If the mayor gets 18%, for whatever excuse is used to justify it, don't expect any of the unions to rush to accept much less. A raise may be justified, but please keep in mind, nobody can give that size raise to just one employee without a ripple effect throughout the city. Despite what moccia says, he expects to get re-elected and to get the raise in both his salary and his PENSION. The pension will be more than 18% higher because he will have worked more years and length of service is part of pension benefit calculations. View Comment

When a person that age goes out without his cell phone and wallet, that is not a good sign. Suicide is the ultimate act of depression. Apparently, whatever treatment he was getting was not enough. Depression, especially in people that age, away from home for possibly the first time, should never be taken lightly. My heart goes out to his family. For all the folks that don't like to see police officers working OT at street jobs where the road is being dug, take a look at the story in Fairfield Daily Voice where two Fairfield officers arrested a robbery suspect while working a street job. Sometimes, having extra officers with police radios on the street adds a lot to the on-duty police officers. View Comment

Amazing restraint by local police, after he shot at them last night. My money was on he was going to go out in one last blaze of glory and get killed in the process, just like his big brother. A lot of experts on police procedure here. The chief should recruit of few of these guys to show him how a real police dept is run. Can't help wondering why this group is so negative about police. Could it be they have all had negative experience with police ? Maybe we should go back to the way the police dept in Mayberry was run to keep these experts happy. The president said a lot of the same things and developments since this post have demonstrated these terrorists picked the wrong event, in the wrong city, in the wrong country, and the marathon will be run next year. As this is written, one terrorist is dead and other(s) are being sought. There is, apparently, information linking the two that planted the bombs with someone in Norwalk. Before the investigation is closed, everybody involved will be in custody or killed in gunfights with police. Capturing them alive offers the prospect of learning, but protecting the lives of the law enforcement officers involved is more important. None should get a chance to kill anybody else. View Comment

For what it is worth, the Texas District attorney and his wife both carried guns all the time for personal protection. The stories about them being murdered do not indicate if either had a chance to draw a gun or if their guns were taken by the killer(s). The Deputy Sherrif killed in his car in West Virginia was also armed. Sad to say, carrying a gun, much less just having one in the house, is no guarantee. Laws limiting weapons on school property are a move in the right direction, if effectively enforced, with serious sentencing for violations. Mostly, those laws are just ways for politicians to make themselves feels better and go on record as being on the right side of an issue. View Comment

When your power is out, the meter stops and you are not billed for energy while the power is out. Their numbers crunchers have figured out it is cheaper to outsource tree trimming and repairs than to maintain a big enough crew of their own lineman. The money they save, they pay out to high level execs and stockholders. $462 million is chumpchange to them. but sounds like an opportunity to apply for another rate increase. Their financial reports are available online and they are far from hurting. They will happily spend big money lobbying for rate increases and find ways to keep public opposition from being heard at any public hearings. They have dozens of people sign up to speak for them and any public opposition will not get a chance to be heard. Somehow, their lobbyists always manage to get access to the signup-to-speak lists before they are available to the public. They just posted dividends for stock holders of 50 to 80 cents a share. If a builder wants a new service, CL&P insists on underground lines from their pole to the building, they are well aware how many outages that prevents. The increase they are asking for, for 1.7 million customers, will raise each bill about $3/month or $36 X 1.7 million a year, way more than they claim the storms cost them. View Comment

OT does NOT have an effect on pensions. The police contract is available online. Not all the job sites where you see cops working OT are city jobs, a lot are private jobs where a property owner is paying to have something installed or repaired. The city does get a percentage of any OT job when cops are hired and that fee is added to the bill to the contractor. View Comment

No. In the history of the dept there has rarely (once before ?) been a second Deputy Chief. There were Captains, at a lower pay grade, handling the responsibilities, but they have now eliminated Captains. There have been other ranks created and filled, from time to time, above Captains and below Deputy Chiefs called Inspectors. Now, everything above the rank of Lieutenant. is an appointment and there are few, if any, requirements for appointment expect possibly being a Lieutenant. View Comment

Mr Norwalk CT Are you suggesting that all the people running construction companies are so stupid that they eagerly spend the overtime rate for a police officer when they could get the same job done for a lot less money ? If you look around a bit you will see that not all construction sites have police officers, some have laborers with signs. A lot depends, apparently, on what insurance company a particular contractor uses, how busy the street is that they are working on, and the kind of barricades used to protect the site. Sometimes, the contractor asks for an officer and doesn't get one and has to resort to using laborers with signs. The construction site jobs are not assigned, all officers working them are volunteers and there are frequently more jobs than volunteers. As to my "vested interest" in the police, it would be interesting to hear you explain that one. I do not work for the police dept and nobody in my family works for the police dept. I don't even know if your numbers are accurate, I suspect you don't either and have exaggerated the savings when laborers are used. View Comment

I saw a moose over in Westchester near the reservoir a few years ago and was unable to get a picture. I was told by a guy who knows about animals that there is a parasite that infects an occasional moose and gets into the brain. The effect is that animal starts to wander and will get some distance from it's normal range without eating and will eventually die of starvation. The one I saw was very thin, but seemed to move ok when it crossed the road in front of me. This same guy told me there were a lot of moose in new hampshire and western massachusets and parts of new york state and it was only a matter of time before they established a herd closer to us in Fairfield County. Don't underestimate Harry as a candidate. He is a smart guy who managed the police dept pretty well considering the limits he was working under in a Moccia administration. If he ends up as the candidate opposing Moccia, he knows a lot that Moccia will not want revealed, and he is a lot smarter than Moccia. Any debate between them should be hilarious. He will know exactly what buttons to push to make Moccia look like an idiot. Why do you suppose Moccia is, all of a sudden, supporting the idea of adding more police officers ? View Comment

I still maintain the Town Clerk handled his situation of theft from the employer much better than the BoE did. The investigation was promptly turned over to the experts and will probably result in an arrest and conviction and no problem from the union. View Comment
