How does this work for apartment buildings? My office is behind 21 Ann Street and the building is overwhelmingly residential. City Carting does our garbage and has a variety of recycling receptacles; it will be a relief to single stream. View Comment
Brick would be very attractive. I don't know enough about it to have an opinion either way as to cost or maintenance. As an aside I'm concerned about the SONO sidewalks where the brick was ripped up to install (I think) the new camera ready traffic lights. I hope they're put back the way they were soon. View Comment
I disagree with my neighbor and friend, Bitsy Farnsworth of Harbor View. I pass City Carting's facility on Meadow Street all the time and I don't think it smells. I go to the town's transfer station pretty often too - that does reek! Moreover, City Carting handles our private garbage collection in Harbor View for a competitive cost delivering excellent service. It's been said at community meetings that complaints are way down from previous providers. View Comment
This is really exciting and I pray we can get sufficient volume of visitors! Norwalk is truly developing desirable destinations and activities for tourists; it's time for synergy to take effect. View Comment
You're absolutely right about age-appropriate political education. I took my "product of the Norwalk public schools now doctoral candidate in comparative literature" daughter to picket the Lincoln Day Dinner many years ago! Just be sure your kids also learn about the inequity of the state's ECS funding. If we could bring all this passion to Hartford maybe something would finally happen. View Comment
It's pretty disturbing to read about a 5 year old crying because her favorite teacher might lose her job, or this rising 7th grader being threatened by her mom that they'll have to move...I hope these stories are more for show than real fear and insecurities being foisted on their kids. Ms. Fawcett was a commanding presence in the library's film department - tall and stately, articulate, kind. Those were good days and my daughter and I share fond memories of checking out our videos 25 years ago. She was one lady who really made a contribution to society. View Comment
The film is inspiring. Epidemiologist, Dr. Gary Slutkin, makes a concrete, step by step argument about the disease of violence, its effects and the efforts of the group, CeaseFire, to intervene, diffuse and change behavior. There are a lot of things we should be doing - education, early intervention, holding people accountable, better street lighting, gun control, but Dr. Slutkin's methods came across as a really strong tool to muster within the community. The Charter School that benefitted from last year's Mayor's Ball has very specific goals to address the achievement gap. To me privatization of the teachers in this endeavor is secondary to a greater good. As I recall, the budget that gets posted on line is usually 3 columns - proposed by the departments, proposed by the finance director, adopted by the BET. View Comment
Despite agreeing with almost everything Ms. King is saying, I am mad as heck that she - and the Daily Norwalk - is spinning this into a political story. Constructive criticism is helpful and pointing out your fellow candidates' strengths or incumbents' failings is honest. But if this serious situation gets mucked up with political acrimony because an election is a month away, well, these are persons' vocations and avocations you're messing with and that's ignoble behavior. Stick to the facts, even if the facts are that you advocated for more money for the schools than the BOE allowed. But I don't see how that has anything to do with this diatribe or tone. View Comment
These pictures are from the Harbor View neighborhood, not Harbor Shores. The sailboat across from Neptune is in Harbor Shores but it's been sunk there for months, and not a casualty of Irene. View Comment
In the Personnel Committee meeting minutes, Tom Hamilton graphically outlined his department's accomplishments in support of the ordinance list pay increase. I can imagine in these troubled times another city luring him away for the amount of money he's making. There's only so long people can do thankless jobs with minimal reward, or affirmations.
