Zuniga's Goal Boosts Norwalk

Nick Zuniga scored early in the second half and Norwalk High School held on to defeat Conard, 1-0, in the first round of the Class LL boys soccer playoffs Tuesday. The fourth-seeded Bears advance to play Simsbury at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Norwalk (15-3) was playing its first game since being stunned by eight-seeded New Canaan in the first round of the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference tournament. Playing without leading scorer Andres Torres who has a one game suspension for a red card in the New Canaan contest, the Bears dominated possession and generated quality shots against 29th-seeded Conard. Zuniga's goal gave the Bears what they needed to put away the Chieftains.

Norwalk meets No. 13 Simsbury in the next round. Simsbury eliminated 20th-seeded Brien McMahon, 4-2, on Monday. A victory could mean a showdown Saturday against Staples, the No. 5 seed. Staples plays Guilford in another second round game Thursday. Staples defeated Norwalk, 1-0, during the regular season.
