Second-grader Colin Falla was crowned the state champion for the second consecutive year in the bantam division.

The tournament for students in kindergarten through second grade was held Sunday at Westhill High School in Stamford.

“I got a little nervous leading up to my first match, but once the whistle blew, I was fine,” said Colin, who is in second grade. “I had a slow beginning today but finally settled in and just worked my moves."

Finalists for the Mad Bulls included Nicky Singer, Ryan Schneider, Quincy Carter as well as rookie standouts Julian Raphaelson and Yancy Braxton. Placing third were Henry Motley, Jayden Gravel, Will Motley and Bly Christianson.

Adding to the medal count for the day were newcomers Noah Kerins and Alec Bernstein, both placing fourth after winning their first two bouts of the day.

“This is the time of year that we see all of the work and effort the kids have been putting in all year at practice getting put on display here at the state championships. We had some amazing matches here today,” said program director Randy Haus. “Our kids came here to battle, and they did just that as our entire coaching staff is pleased with the progress we are seeing on our club. These kids had a remarkable day.”
