Nicky Singer, Jason Singer, Koy Price, Jack Cahill and Mikey Bartush captured gold medals. Sam White, Noah Fraas, Damari Maxam, Jacob Gonzales and Charlie Prather finished second. Dean Tsiranides and Patrick Coulter took third.
In one of the first matches of the day, second-grader and newcomer Jacob Gonzales won in dramatic fashion with an aggressive takedown to seal an overtime victory, setting the tone for the day.
First-grader Jason Singer earned the first gold medal of his career. Mikey Bartush and Nicky Singer pinned three opponents and dominated their weight classes. Jack Cahill, a former state champion for the Mad Bulls, won two matches by pin and one by decision.
After a great start, fourth-grader Noah Fraas lost a heartbreaking 2-1 decision, as his last second attempt at a takedown just missed as the buzzer sounded to end the match. Fraas shook off the loss as he later rallied by pinning his opponent for the silver medal.
Koy Price, a fifth-grader, kept his unbeaten streak alive dating back to last year as the reigning Connecticut State Champion in his weight class, running his consecutive winning streak to 29 straight wins without a loss.
“Koy Price has some great competition this year in our own wrestling room in practice, Patrick Coulter and Dean Tsiranides are rising stars in our program, we see great things ahead for them with their tireless work ethic in practice,'' program director Randy Haus said.
"Overall we have some very talented kids that will be compliment one and other, each wrestler will make his partner better as the competition can get pretty fierce in our own wrestling room at times, we are excited to see how the kids do this year, they certainly work hard enough."
This weekend the Mad Bulls will travel to New Milford for more tournament competition.
