NORWALK, Conn. - The Norwalk Mad Bulls youth wrestling team won six championships and had 10 top-three finishes in a tournament last weekend in Ledyard. Norwalk finished second in team scoring.
“We’re not a team that measures our success by medals and trophies; we’re all about effort and focus,’’ coach David Slapin said. “We just challenge the kids to get better, and they responded very well. They were awesome.”
Koy Price, a fourth-grader, and Luke Villaluz, a third-grader, had a combined seven pins en route to victories in their weight classes.
Artie Cocchia, Jack Cahill, Zack Simon and Nicky Singer also won titles in a meet that featured teams from Connecticut, New York and Rhode Island. Cocchia pinned a national place winner from last year en route to his win.
Jaylen Carter and Alexander Simon finished second, while Charlie Prather and Mikey Bartush took third.
“We preach about being good teammates and workout partners all season long,’’ coach Art Schad said. “For each wrestler to contribute today speaks volumes of how dedicated these kids are. We’re so proud of the effort, and now we are seeing amazing results.”
