Whirlwind Divers Make Waves at Invitational

Whirlwind Diving at the New Canaan YMCA hosted and won the annual Whirlwind Winter Weekend Dive meet this past weekend. Divers from throughout the Northeast region competed, with Whirlwind Diving taking overall honors with 441 points. The Greenwich Marlins finished second with 214.

Carolina Sculti, 10, of the Greenwich Marlins, won the high point award with four gold medals in the girls 11-and-under and 12-13 1-meter and 3-meter events. Elizabeth Fitzpatrick, 13, of Darien, won two gold medals in the girls 14-15 1-meter and 3-meter events. Katie Warburg, 17, Wilton, won a gold medal in the girls 16-18 1-meter event.

Fitzpatrick and Warburg, who dive for Whirlwind Diving, recently competed against the country’s top divers in the USA Diving Senior Nationals competition in Iowa City, Iowa. Warburg is the 2010 Connecticut high school state champion and an All-American diver. Fitzpatrick is a member of the USA Diving Junior Elite Performance Squad.

Whirlwind’s Jake Bowtell, 15, of Darien, won the Boys 16-18 1-meter event and Westport's Zach Slater, 17, took home the silver. Marlins diver James Hopper, 11, won double gold in the boys 11-and-under 1-meter and 3-meter events.

Bowtell earned a silver medal in the boys 16-18 3-meter event. Whirlwind Diving's Kylie Towbin, 13, of New Canaan, earned a bronze in the girls’ 14-15 3-meter event. Steven Kreuch, 13, and Jackson McGoldrick , 14, of Darien medaled  in the boys 14-15 events. Kreuch earned silver on 1-meter, and McGoldrick took bronze on 3-meter. Darien’s Lee Christensen, 14, came in fourth on the 3-meter. Whirlwind Diving’s Margaret Rogers, 11, of Ridgefield, won a silver medal in the 12-13 3-meter event and a bronze on the 1-meter. Justin Sodokoff, 11, of Whirlwind Diving, earned silver medals in both the boys' 1-meter and 3-meter events, with Darien’s Tim Luz, 11, earning bronze in both events. Sodokoff is also a member of the USA Diving Junior Elite Performance Squad.

Sam Scribano, 10, of Darien, earned double silver medals in the boys 11-and-under 1-meter and 3-meter events. Greenwich divers Annabelle Pollack and Sydney Schrenker won silver medals in the girls 11-and-under 1-meter and 3-meter competitions. Amanda Pyne, 10, of Whirlwind Diving, won the bronze in the 1-meter event.

Darien’s 8 year-old diver Piper Van Wagenen made her competitive debut by winning gold in the 9-and-under 3-meter competition and silver in the 1-meter competition. Whirlwind Diving looks forward to a promising future with the talented Van Wagenen.

New to Whirlwind Winter Weekend Dive meet was the Synchronized Diving event in which two divers compete together and are judged on both dive mechanics and synchronization. Whirlwind Diving coach and director Joe Somma is enthusiastic about the future of synchronized diving. Whirlwind Diving's Margaret Rogers and Parkland Diving Mary Warker won gold in the 13-and-under 3-meter synchronized event. Justin Sodokoff and Lee Christensen earned silver in the 14-18 3-meter event.
