Judging by the reaction on Facebook and Twitter, the highlight of the ceremony for many viewers was the reunion of the Spice Girls, followed by "Monty Python" alum Eric Idle leading the crowd of 80,000 in a sing-along rendition of the comedy troupe's "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life."

The ceremony capped more than two weeks of memorable sporting events. The United States won more medals than any other country, racking up 46 gold, 29 silver and 29 bronze medals.
