NEW CANAAN, Conn. Most Tuesday mornings during the school year, a group from the Waveny Running Club assembles for a speed workout on the high school track, followed by a snack and small talk. This week, the sprinting was shortened to allow for carbo-loading as the group held its annual Christmas party at the Lodge at Waveny Park.
A club tradition was revived this year as the two-dozen runners were split into four teams for the Santa Hat Relay, in which each participant ran one lap of the track wearing a red fur-trimmed Christmas hat. After a warm-down run, a potluck brunch was shared with members of the senior men's paddle tennis group. They concluded with a Yankee Swap exchange of gifts, most of them running related.
The Waveny Running Club has been in existence more than 10 years and draws participants from New Canaan, Norwalk, Wilton, Stamford and Greenwich. It meets Tuesdays at 9:20 a.m. at the Lodge and is open to runners of all abilities.
