6 p.m. update: FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The U.S. women's hockey team won the Olympic opener Saturday in Sochi over Finland, 3-1, as a player with ties to Connecticut scored the first goal less than a minute into the game.

Hilary Knight, who graduated from Wallingford's Choate Rosemary Hall, scored 53 seconds into the game and then assisted on Alex Carpenter’s second-period goal. USA's Kelli Stack scored the third goal.

Team USA also includes four-time Olympian Julie Chu of Fairfield.

The United States plays Switzerland on Monday for a chance to clinch a spot in the semifinals.

In its opener, Canada topped Switzerland, 5-0, in the other opener for Group A. Canada will take on Finland on Monday.

The North American teams -- the favorites for gold -- will meet up in the round-robin tournament on Feb. 12. Two teams from Group A will move to the medal round.

The women's hockey schedule and results can be found here at the official Sochi 2014 website.
