The United States qualified for the gold medal game after defeating Sweden, 6-1, on Monday. The U.S. outshot Sweden, 70-9.

Canada qualified after beating Switzerland, 3-1, on Monday. The Canadian women's hockey team has won the gold medal at the last three Olympic games after falling to the United States in the first Olympic women's hockey final in 1998.

The gold medal game will be played Thursday, with the women's teams playing for the first time in the Bolshoy Ice Dome in Sochi, where the men's games are played. The game will start at noon EST and will be broadcast live on NBC. The winning team will win gold; the losing team will get silver.

At the Sochi Olympics, the U.S. team kicked off with a 3-1 victory over Finland on Feb. 8, followed by a 9-1 win over Switzerland on Feb. 10. The team suffered its only loss on Feb. 12 to archrival Canada, 3-2. It enters the gold medal game with a 3-1 record and looking to avenge the loss last week to Canada.

Canada has a perfect 4-0 record at the Sochi Olympics, beating Switzerland, 5-0; Finland, 3-0; and the U.S, 3-2.

Four years ago, the U.S. women's hockey team left the Olympics in Vancouver with a silver medal, losing the gold medal to Canada.

"When that buzzer goes off and it erupted in the arena and we fell short of our goal of being the best in the world, that hurts," Chu, a four-time Olympian, was quoted by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution as saying about the 2010 loss after Monday's win. "The last four years, that's been our goal."

Chu, who has two silver medals and a bronze from her three previous Olympic appearances, said, "We're going for a different color this time."
