NORWALK, Conn. The Swingers are 2-for-2 in the Norwalk Recreation and Parks coed softball league. The team, which has been together for just two years, won its second straight league championship Wednesday night with a 15-3 pounding of the Bulldogs.
Matt Mitchell took the mound for The Swingers after his father, Chuck, was unavailable due to illness. His team's offense made it look easy, with home runs from Johnny Ezzo and Justin Floody. Taylor Montross added two hits, including a two-run double, as the Swingers scored in every inning. Mitchell added five RBIs.
"There was better competition this year,'' Mitchell said. "It was a little tougher. It's fun to get out here with the girls and play every week."
The Swingers won the first-half championship and finished the regular season with a 14-2 record. The Bulldogs, who finished with the fourth-best record in the nine-team league at 10-6, were a surprise finalist. They took a quick 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI by Joe Cote, who had two RBIs on the night for the Bulldogs.
The Swingers answered with three in the bottom of the inning. Ezzo's RBI single tied it and Floody's two-run double put the Swingers ahead for good. Mitchell's two-run double and Ezzo's RBI triple sparked a four-run second inning. Montross stroked a two-run double to right field in the fourth and Mitchell added a two-run single to make it 11-2. Ezzo's solo home run leading off the sixth ended the game via the mercy rule.
"We hit the ball better than some teams in the league,'' Mitchell said. "The girls have been a big part of that. They're good in the field and they make the plays. "
Infusium finished 15-1 in the regular season, a game ahead of The Swingers. Infusium, which lost to The Swingers in last year's championship game , was eliminated earlier in this year's playoffs.
Mitchell's sister, Jess, put the team together last year. Chuck is the primary pitcher. Other team members include Lexie Ouellette, Christine Coppola, Jenn Vincent, Kristopher Whittaker, Kyle Mastropietro and Christine Powers.
