The Red Sox finished in last place in their division for the first time in 20 years and suffered their worst record, 69-93, since 1965. Injuries plagued Red Sox all season, but Valentine's managerial style was constantly questioned by the Boston media and publicly by some players.

Boston's poor performance and players clashing with Valentine led to an unloading of expensive talent by the Red Sox front office. Before the year was over, Boston had traded  Kevin Youkilis, Carl Crawford, Josh Beckett and Adrian Gonzalez.

Youkilis publicly sparred with Valentine in just the second week of the season, while Crawford, Beckett and Gonzalez vastly underperformed, despite having contracts totalling a quarter of a billion dollars.

Valentine signed a two-year contract before the 2012 season. According to Gordon Edes of ESPNBoston.com, Valentine will still receive his salary he would have been owed for the 2013 season.
