Haggerty, a junior, scored 28 goals and collected 15 assists this season at RPI. He lead the team in goals, points, power play goals and game-winning goals.

"I am thrilled to see Ryan earn the opportunity to sign an NHL contract with the New York Rangers," RPI head coach Seth Appert said in a statement on the RPI website.

"His growth as a player and person in his three years at RPI was impressive and is a real testament to his daily work ethic. He showed up at the rink every day with a mentality to improve his game and get better. I look forward to proudly watching him as a member of the New York Rangers organization."

"We have watched Ryan closely the past few years and the two things that stick out the most are: he can score, and he has gotten better every year," Rangers assistant general manager Jeff Gorton said on Blueshirts.com. "We really like Ryan's work ethic and his drive to get better every day."

Haggerty played at Trinity Catholic High School in Stamford and was a former student at Villa Maria School in Stamford. He also played on the U.S. National Development Team in 2010-11.

RPI’s season ended Sunday with a 5-4 loss to Dartmouth in the East Coast Athletic Conference hockey playoffs. The team finished the year with a 15-16-1 record. Haggerty had a goal and an assist in the final game. In 106 career games over his three seasons at RPI, he had 47 goals and 37 assists for 84 points.

He was a nominee for the Hobey Baker Award as the top college player. The top 10 finalists will be announced March 20.
