NORWALK, Conn. – Norwalk is in for a welcome deep freeze, as the SoNo Ice House officially opened its doors to the public and ushered in the new Connecticut Oilers semi-pro hockey team's season.

Gov. Dannel Malloy, Norwalk Mayor Richard Moccia and state Sen. Bob Duff christened the new facility on Wilson Avenue. Featuring an NHL-size rink, a smaller practice rink, a pro shop, cafe and a gym, the SoNo Ice House aims to become the hockey hub of Fairfield County.

The Connecticut Oilers will be a big part of that goal, playing in the semi-professional Eastern Junior Hockey League. Several former members of the Norwalk Home Oilers, the semi-professional team that played in town from 1959 to 1972, attended the event.

Stamford native Ryan Hughes, founder and managing partner of the SoNo Ice House, also addressed the crowd of about 100 guests. The facility has been a labor of love for Hughes, who got emotional discussing all that went into building and financing the project and bringing hockey back to Norwalk.

Something that puts Norwalk back on the map shows investors Norwalk is growing this is such awesome progress. Our kids will be able to enjoy something in South Norwalk-Rowyaton not based on wealth and who knows who. This has to be the largest milestone since the Sono house down the street.I'm a bit surprised no one has posted the positive signal this sends to our city to our State and all who are involved should be thanked as our Gov has done.

To those pathetic losers who wanted to destroy Ryan Park for a dime and tell South Norwalk what it needed where are they now?

They were not with our future Mayor Harry at Ryan park today making another milestone enjoying the park without gunfire while gathering for a non voilent day filled with kids doing what they do best in a so called needless park, enjoying themselves.

Hoop was in full swing the court look great with players of all ages races and Democrtatic background.

This new rink has taught many lessons to those selfish self serving skirters and Norwalk civic wannabees, leave South Norwalk alone let them build a better city with Harry and not that lump Dick.

Now the attention should be drawn to Meadow st where laws are broken environment is ignored and children are in peril and held hostage bt City Carting and Lajoies.

It was nice to see all the media take in touch a truck and listen to City carting show us the brand new rubbish truck we will all see,did anyone know about Ryan park today?

Seriously folks it was nice seeing so many people so many officers and city officials with the police tape gather to bolster the sense of security in South Norwalk.
