FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. Teams from Darien and New Canaan square off this weekend in the semifinals of the eighth grade division of the Fairfield County Football League playoffs.
Semifinals for players in grades 3 through 8 will be held this weekend at various locales. The semifinal winners advance to the championship games next weekend.
In the eighth grade league, New Canaan Red hosts Darien Blue at 8 p.m., Saturday at Dunning Stadium. On Sunday, Darien White hosts New Canaan Black at 1:30 p.m.
The New Canaan teams shared the title last season. New Canaan Red, which went 7-1 during the regular season, earned the top seed for the playoffs. Darien White went 6-1, while New Canaan Black went 6-1-1. Darien Blue finished 5-2 and is the No. 5 seed.
Four communities are represented in the sixth grade division. Fairfield Red, the No. 1 seed, meets Darien Blue on Sunday at 1 p.m., at Fairfield Warde. Wilton Black hosts Westport North at noon on Sunday at Wilton High School. Fairfield, Darien and Wilton all had one loss during the regular season, while Westport lost twice. Westport has already won two games in the playoffs, both by 6-0 decisions.
Two Darien teams are in the seventh grade semifinals. Darien Blue hosts Fairfield Blue Saturday at 10 a.m., while Darien White hosts Ridgefield at noon on Sunday. If both Darien teams win, they will be awarded co-championships.
Darien also has two teams in the fifth grade semifinals. Darien Blue meets Wilton Blue at Wilton High School on Sunday at 1:30 p.m., and the Darien Wave plays at Dunning Stadium Saturday at 6:30 against New Canaan Red.
Two Wilton and New Canaan teams advanced to the fourth grade semifinals. Wilton White meets New Canaan Red at Wilton High School on Sunday at 3 p.m. New Canaan Black meets Wilton Blue on Sunday at Wilton High at 10:30.
Wilton and New Canaan are also the last teams standing in the third grade division. Wilton Blue plays New Canaan Red at 4 p.m. on Saturday at Wilton High School, and Wilton White meets New Canaan Black at 5:30 at Wilton.
The start of the league playoffs were postponed due to the October snowstorm. Some teams have played midweek playoff games to get the schedule back on track.
