Runners Race to Support Wilton Schools

There was lots of talking trash Sunday as runners gathered for the third annual Get Smart For Wilton 5k at the high school track. "There's no way you're beating me," or "I won't win this thing, but I will beat you." But it was all in good fun.

Over 250 runners came out for the race, which benefits the Wilton school system. It is expected to generate about $5,000, which will go to the purchase of Smart Board technology, to be used where needed in art classrooms, and for the professional development of teachers.

As runners lined up on the track, they were instructed to go around the track and exit to take a cross-country route around the school grounds, then return for another lap around the track to the finish line.

The air horn sounded and Norwalk's Noredine Abdelfateh led from the start, finishing first overall with a time of 16 minutes, 49 seconds. Abdelfateh was happy to win but thought he should have been faster. "Last week in Stamford I was 40 seconds faster," he said. "I wasn't happy with my time."

Wilton's Mary Zengo finished first among the women at 20 minutes, 5 seconds. "I've been running for a long time and I run these races all the time," Zengo said. "I live in Wilton and this event is for a good cause, so I'm happy to do it."

Abdelfateh and Zengo each received $100 prizes.

One of the directors of the race, Kara Bingaman, said there was a good atmosphere at the event. "Everyone seems like they're having fun here, and the Wilton community really came out to support the school system," she said. "It was a great day and I was pleased with the turnout."
