NEW CANAAN, Conn. Almost 100 runners, many of them suffering from cabin fever after three days without power, showed up at Waveny Park Tuesday evening for the finale of the 32nd annual Summer Cross Country Series. The runners raced beneath the dwindling light and finished between lights in the form of luminaria, or candles inside paper bags.
Geoff Nelson and Caroline Hopkins were the first place male and female finishers, but the real winner was the Jenny Crain Make It Happen Fund, which got almost $400 from the race's proceeds. Crain, a national-class distance runner from Wisconsin who often competed in Connecticut, was hit by a car during a training run three years ago and suffered a traumatic brain injury. She continues a lengthy rehabilitation, and the fund was set up to defray her huge medical costs.
This year's series drew record fields to many of the races, which were held on Tuesday evenings throughout the summer. Complete results are available on the Club Connecticut Website .
