Ripken Edges Cranbury in Norwalk Corbo Tourney

NORWALK, Conn. – The third game of the annual Norwalk Corbo U-10 Tournament featured a pitchers' duel between the West Norwalk Ripken All-Stars and the Cranbury Mustang All-Stars. Ripken starter David Brongati and Mustang hurler Clay Bray each racked up the strikeouts on Thursday evening at Corbo/Anastasia Field.

Bray won that contest with 11 Ks to Brongati's 8. But West Norwalk won the battle that mattered, beating Cranbury for the second time in the tournament, 5-2.

Ripken held a slim 1-0 lead in the fourth inning when it turned an unconventional 4-3-5 double play on Cranbury. That ignited the offense in the bottom of the inning. Ripken sent eight batters to the plate, with Brongati hitting an RBI double. Three more runs scored on wild pitches. Jake Osborne scored twice in the game for Ripken.

Bray had Cranbury's big hit with a double in the fifth. He scored on a wild pitch. Ryan Trani singled and scored in the sixth for Cranbury.

Ripken played strong defense, committing only two errors. Shortstop Travis Lajoie had a busy evening, assisting on four putouts.

The Cal Ripken All-Stars will take on the Norwalk Little League All-Stars on Friday evening at 6 p.m. Cranbury will play Little League its final game of the Corbo tournament on Saturday at 10 a.m.

The annual Corbo Tournament pits Norwalk's three youth baseball leagues -- Little League, Cranbury PONY baseball and Cal Ripken -- against each other in a friendly week of games.
