Race Begins for Girls Soccer Playoffs

The race for the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference girls soccer playoff spots will come down to the final games today. Nine teams are in contention for the eight spots, and the top three seeds still have to be determined.

Staples and Fairfield Warde are tied for seventh in the league with 27 points. Trumbull is in ninth place with 25 points. Staples plays Darien today while Fairfield Warde hosts Brien McMahon. Trumbull is at St. Joseph. Darien is the No. 5 seed with 28 points. Westhill has 28 points and is seeded sixth. Westhill plays Trinity Catholic in its regular-season finale.

Ridgefield's loss to St. Joseph on Tuesday threw the top three spots into a frenzy. Ridgefield is still seeded No. 1 with 34 points, followed by Greenwich (33 points) and New Canaan. Greenwich hosts Danbury at 6 p.m. New Canaan meets Ridgefield at 7 p.m. at Dunning Field.

The girls soccer playoffs begin Saturday.
