Poll: Yankees Bomb Red Sox Among Fairfield County Baseball Fans

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- The New York Yankees thump the Boston Red Sox among baseball fans in Fairfield County and across Connecticut with the Bronx Bombers' biggest lead since 2006, in Quinnipiac University's 13th Annual Connecticut Baseball Poll released Friday.

Baseball fans prefer the Yankees 44 percent to 37 percent for the Red Sox across the Nutmeg state, the poll said. In Fairfield County, the lead is insurmountable: The New York Yankees are up 53 percent to  15 percent for the Boston Red Sox.

The Yankee lead in the state of 7 percentage points is up from 5 percentage point margin in each of the last four years of the survey conducted by the independent Quinnipiac University.

This year, the New York Mets won the hearts of 6 percent of fans, their worst showing ever.

The Baseball Poll measures the loyalty of 51 percent of Connecticut adults who say they are "very interested" or "somewhat interested" in Major League Baseball.

In other parts of the state, the fan base varies widely. The Yankees are up 52 percent to  33 percent in New Haven and Middlesex counties. But the Red Sox rule 51 percent to  32 percent in Hartford County and 57 percent to  34 percent in Tolland, Windham and New London Counties.

Men back the Bombers 43 percent to 36 percent, while women like pinstripes 45 percent to 38 percent across Connecticut.

"The captain may have retired, but the Yankees widen their dominance over the Red Sox with Connecticut baseball fans rallying to the Yankees by the largest margin we've seen in nearly a decade," said Quinnipiac University Poll Director Douglas Schwartz.

The poll was conducted from March 6 to 9 as Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,434 Connecticut adults with a margin of error 2.6 percentage points.
