Offenses Explode in Clash of Norwalk 5th Graders

NORWALK, Conn. – It took two plays from scrimmage for Zyiare Sellers to set the tone in a battle of fifth-grade teams in the Norwalk Youth Football League game. Fortunately for the Green team, it had Sellers on its side.

Sellers scored four touchdowns, including a 66-yard burst two plays into the game, to pace the fifth grade Green Packers over the fifth grade Gold Packers, 42-27. For the afternoon, Sellers rushed for 217 yards on 14 carries and broke off scoring runs of 66, 77, 16 and 3 yards.

Kelete Sherald added 91 yards rushing and two touchdowns for the Green team, which is coached by Jim Wrinn. Justin Forde scored four touchdowns and completed a 50-yard pass to Bret Rodgers to set up another score for the Gold team, which is coached by Ray Alfson.

Sellers started the offensive fireworks with his 66-yard run 1:18 into the game. Sherald caught the conversion pass to give the Green Packers an early 7-0 lead.

Forde answered on the next drive for the Gold, scoring on an 18-yard run. Jake Dumas' run for the conversion tied the game at 7-7.

Sherald, who was the Green's Mr. Inside to Sellers' Mr. Outside, capped a long drive by scoring on 2-yard run late in the first quarter. He carried six times for 55 yards on the drive, and added the conversion run. Sellers' 77-yard run with 5:56 to play in the second quarter and another conversion by Sherald made it 21-7. Sherald scored on a 13-yard run late in the first half and Erik Hernandez scored the conversion to give the Green team a 28-7 lead.

The Gold team bounced back with 58 seconds left in the first half on a 3-yard run by Forde, who rushed for 44 yards on the afternoon. Dumas added the conversion to make it 28-14 and put Gold within striking distance at the half.

Sellers scored on a 16-yard run and Sherald added the conversion as the offensive fireworks continued late in the third quarter. Forde answered with an electrifying 78-yard kickoff run, and Jahmir Lee rumbled in for the conversion to make it 35-21 entering the fourth quarter.

Sellers scored on a 3-yard run in the fourth quarter, and the Gold got a final touchdown when Dumas connected with Forde on a 91-yard touchdown pass in the final minute.

The Green team (1-1) hosts Shelton on Sunday at 12:30 at Brien McMahon. The Gold team (0-2-1) has a bye week.
