NORWALK, Conn. TPT Engravers of the Norwalk Cal Ripken League continued its string of upsets Thursday, defeating the New Canaan Orioles, 7-3, in a battle between league champions at Fox Run School.
Cory Acevedo and Chris van der Els pitched three strong innings apiece for TPT, which won the league championship earlier this week.
Norwalk took a 2-0 lead in the first as van der Els and Kyle Woodring singled, followed by walks to Ronnie Visiglia, Acevedo and Brian Fermin. Van der Els scored on a Visiglia groundout in the third to put TPT up 3-0.
The Orioles answered with a pair of runs to get within 3-2. Norwalk upped its score in the fourth on a hustle run created by Fermin. Justin Longo and Ryan Porter were hit by pitches to set up another Norwalk run in the fifth. Longo eventually scored on a steal of home.
Norwalk added two runs in the sixth as Woodring scored on an overthrow and Fermins groundout brought home Visiglia. New Canaan threatened in the bottom of the inning before van der Els got out of the jam with only one run allowed.
The attitude of the team coaches, players and parents was the same all year, said coach Mitch van der Els, a veteran of several house seasons and All-Star campaigns (he is one of three coaches who will be involved with this years 12-year old All Star Team). We never got down when we were losing [their official record was 3-8, although they were 4-1 in their games against Cranbury LL for an overall record of 7-9]. We kept it positive and even-keel no matter what. Particularly in the last couple of weeks, we were competitive in every game and the improvement of some of the younger kids was really impressive and great to see.
Norwalk's All-Star team begins play in a 12-year-old tournament this weekend in Bethel.
