Norwalk's Carver Boys Win Sixth-Grade Crown

NORWALK, Conn. – The Carver Center sixth-grade boys' basketball team had several close calls in the Fairfield County Basketball League tournament.

Sunday’s championship game was not one of them.

The Norwalk-based team thumped Mount Vernon, N.Y., 46-29, to win the A bracket in the season-ending tournament. Carver needed overtime to defeat Darien in the quarterfinals, 66-64, and nipped Trumbull Gardens of Bridgeport, 57-55, in the semifinals. Carver opened the playoffs with a 46-40 win versus Ridgefield.

“I was a little surprised,’’ coach Mike McElveen said. “I heard they were a real aggressive team and could shoot well. I was looking for a tough one.”

Instead, it was the easiest game of the tournament for Carver, which finished the season 19-2.

Tyrique Langley, who scored 42 points in the win against Darien, led a balanced scoring attack for Carver.

“Our size gave them a lot of trouble,’’ McElveen said. “It helped us with our rebounding and getting to the free throw line.”

McElveen said he didn’t focus on winning the championship with the team when the tournament started.

“I just wanted to see growth,’’ he said. “This is only the second year with these kids playing together. I’m happy with the way things came together and we’re ready to go into the AAU season.”

Carver’s team includes Sharod Blackwell, Chris Druin, Kelly Gouin, Jeremiah Harris, Tyrique Langley, LeVaughn Lewis, Izaiah Lopez, Xaver Rojas-McCrea, Cameron Shockley and Evan Townsend-Henry.
