NORWALK, Conn. – Ten wrestlers from the Norwalk Mad Bull youth team qualified for this weekend’s Connecticut State Open tournament in New Haven.
Wrestlers needed to finish in the top four in their age group to qualify for states. Norwalk wrestlers who advanced are Koy Price, Artie Cocchia, Charlie Prather, Jeff Capone, Jason Martinez, Jeff Cocchia, Patrick Coulter, Brian Mallozzi, Nick Garoffolo and Jaylen Carter.
Regional champions included Artie Cocchia (87-pound intermediate division), Price (95-pound intermediate division), Jeff Cocchia (novice 112-pound division) and Capone (middle school 160-pound division).
“It was a day filled with nail biting-type matches all day long; the matches often went down to the final few seconds. In most cases the score could have gone either way as kids just battled with intensity just to qualify,” head coach Randy Haus said.
The Norwalk team took an unprecedented 18 kids to the qualifier. The four regional champions will be top seeds for the Connecticut State Open.
“The kids wrestled extremely well today, and collectively we are looking forward to next Sunday to compete at the State Open,” coach David Slapin said.
