Norwalk Woman Sets Record In Summer Running Series

NORWALK, Conn. – Norwalk’s Julie Heaphy made it a sweep of races in the Norwalk-based Lightfoot Summer Series in Saturday’s Sam Elpern Half Marathon. New Canaan’s Lauren Greig made sure Heaphy earned it.

Heaphy won the women’s division in 1:29:16, while Greig was second in 1:31:48 for the 13.1-mile course. Heaphy won all six races in the series, which started with a 3-mile run in June. Daniel Lennox of Bedford, N.Y., was the overall winner in Saturday’s race.

Heaphy got something of a challenge from Greig. Heaphy knew that Greig was not far behind, and that she could not afford to dramatically alter her pace.

“She was pushing me,’’ Heaphy said. “It was definitely motivating. A lot of times you’re out there by yourself in the middle of nowhere. I knew she wasn’t that far behind.”

Heaphy, who was married in August, became the first runner to win every race in the series that began in 1978.

“It’s an amazing feeling,’’ Heaphy said. “It’s a great ending to a good summer.”

Heaphy was sixth overall, and Grieg was seventh. Shana Decsi of Darien finished third among women and 10th overall.

Lennox won in 1:21:09, followed by Fred Wills of Shelton and Frank Bieberly of Somerville, Mass.

“It was a nice day running — I enjoyed it,’’ Lennox said. “I used it as a race to get ready to work my way into the fall and get ready for some races in October and November.”

There were 196 finishers on a delightful day for running. Complete results are available online.
