He came back two days later on Sunday to finish 67th in the Olympic distance but was handicapped by a flat tire on the bike that cost him valuable time.
“On Friday in the sprint I took it a little easier on the bike because it was raining and a pretty technical bike course,’’ Logan said. “I had a great race for me and finished with enough in the tank leaving me feeling strong for Sundays race even after setting a triathlon 5K personal record."
Logan ran the 5K in 17:42 and finished in 1:10:42, seventh among United States athletes. There were 114 athletes in the field.
Logan got a flat tire during a brief ride on Saturday and borrowed a wheel to race on Sunday. He set a personal best in the half-mile swim at 11:53 and was making up ground on the bike.
“I flatted the rear tire on one of the sharp turns with cobblestones at about 15 miles in to the bike, which meant I had to ride 10 miles on a flat rear wheel which cost me about four minutes,’’ Logan said. "Mentally it was tough to handle as I was in the best shape of my life, and having the race of my life. I couldn't wait to get off the bike and on to the run, I just gutted myself on the run and ran with everything I had, collapsing over the finish.” Logan’s closing 10K was 37:54 and his overall time was 2:00:04.
The races were held on the same courses on which triathletes competed in the 2012 Summer Olympics. Logan was not the only Connecticut triathlete to experience frustration, as Greenwich’s Karen Newman also had difficulty with the bike during her race.
“Overall I was extremely happy with both performances but obviously disappointed about the flat tire,’’ Logan said. “It seemed that most of the Connecticut crew had some form of bad luck while out here. I'm looking forward to going to Edmonton next year to race against the world’s best once again.”
