Norwalk Thunder Roars to Tourney Crown

Norwalk Community Soccer Club teams had a strong showing Sunday at the Westport Invitational Tournament. The best showing, however, was by the club's 15-year-old Thunder, which won the 14- to 15-year-old tournament title.

The Thunder topped the 14-year-old NCSC's Gladiators, 5-1, in the championship game to finish the tournament with a 4-0-1 record. The Thunder outscored opponents 25-6 in rolling to the championship.

"We believed we could win it,'' said coach George Chapparo, who was assisted by Anthony Grant during Sunday's tournament at Staples High School. "We brought a winning attitude. We look forward to this tournament every year."

The final was surprisingly lopsided for the Thunder, who battled the Gladiators to a 1-1 standoff earlier in the day. The games were 25 minutes, with six players on each team. The size of the field is also reduced.

The Thunder came out quickly against the Gladiators in the final and scored early and often. The Thunder also defeated Simmons 1 of Suffield, 4-0; the Norwalk Strikers, 9-2, and Simmons 2 of Suffield, 6-2. Chris Chalis scored five goals on the day to lead the Thunder.

"Preparation and attitude,'' Chapparo said when asked the difference between the earlier tie against the Gladiators and the title game rout. "We played as a team, and we worked as a team."
