The Stingers 4.0 Women's Team will hit the courts in Rancho Mirage, Calif., from Sept. 23-25. The team conquered the USTA New England Sectionals from Aug. 19-21, in South Hadley, Mass. -- and it boiled down to one individual win.

The Stingers also defeated teams from eastern Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Their total matches won, which was just a one-match win over two teams which tied for second place, earned them the Sectional Champions title.

The team, captained by June Wang, is composed of women with strong ties to friendship and tennis. "We are an enthusiastic, energetic and goal-driven team," said teammate Val Frost. "We support each other on and off the court. We are culturally and financially diverse, but read as one, and love to party!"

Team members include Meredith Bergman, Lisa Giometti, Xiaoran Liang, Meg Spescha and Wang, from Stamford; Bettina Routh, Michele Tesei and Jessica Yeh, from Greenwich; Lisa Cassells, Val Frost and Wendy Laychak, from Norwalk; Barbara Naparano from Beacon, New York; and Kim Siu from Scarsdale, New York.

Shippan Racquet Club also had a women's 4.5 team which lost in the finals of Sectional Championships, along with Kings Highway Tennis Club, part of the TennisCT family, that had two other teams which advanced to Sectionals.

"We were thrilled to have four teams from our clubs represented in USTA Sectionals and even more excited at the outcome of one team advancing to the Nationals, the highest and most competitive tier of recreational tennis," said Barb Cavaliere, Shippan Racquet Club manager. "Our pros have enjoyed seeing their hard work in practice result in great USTA League success. We very proud of everyone's hard work and determination."
